QUALIFICATION AND FORMAT CONFIRMED FOR CRICKET’S HISTORIC RETURN AT LA28 OLYMPIC GAMES

ICC Media release

  • Six nations will compete in each of the Men’s and Women’s T20 events at LA28
  • Australia, Great Britain, India and South Africa are the first women’s teams to qualify through the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026
  • The newly formed ICC Olympics Qualifier 2027 will decide the final spots

The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have today confirmed the qualification pathway for cricket’s historic return to the Olympic Games at LA28, including the introduction of the first-ever ICC Olympics Qualifier.

Six nations will compete in each of the Men’s and Women’s T20 competitions in Los Angeles, with Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania all guaranteed representation.

Five qualification places in each event will be decided through a combination of existing ICC events and ICC T20I rankings, according to the existing approved and published FTP structure. The sixth and final places in both the Men’s and Women’s competitions will be determined through the new ICC Olympics Qualifier, which will take place in 2027.

The ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 has confirmed the first participants for LA28, with Australia, Great Britain (via England), India and South Africa qualifying by virtue of being the highest-placed eligible finishers from Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania. Those places were capped at one per continent.

As a composite ICC member representing multiple Caribbean nations and not recognised as an IOC National Olympic Committee (NOC), the West Indies are ineligible to participate in the Olympic Games or to obtain a quota place. However, if their men’s and women’s teams are among the eight highest-ranked teams not yet qualified by 31 December 2026, there will be a dedicated Caribbean Qualifier event to determine which NOC will represent the region at the ICC Olympics Qualifier.

From the Americas, the USA are eligible to qualify as hosts for both Men’s and Women’s events, subject to appearing in the top 15 of the relevant ICC T20I rankings at any time during the qualification period from 30 June 2026 to 31 December 2026.

Should the USA Women’s team not meet that criteria, a fifth automatic qualification spot will be awarded to the highest-placed non-qualified nation in the ICC T20I rankings from any continent as of 1 March 2027. If the USA’s men’s team do not meet that criteria, the fifth automatic qualification spot will be allocated to the next-highest-ranked nation from any continent that has not already qualified by 31 December 2026.

The remaining places in the Men’s competition will be decided through the ICC Men’s T20I rankings, with the highest-ranked eligible teams from Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania on 31 December 2026 progressing to LA28.

The final berth in both the Men’s and Women’s events will be decided at the ICC Olympics Qualifier 2027, which will feature eight nations in each of the Men’s and Women’s competitions. Information on dates and a host nation will follow in due course.

The other seven teams in each ICC Olympics Qualifier will be the next highest-ranked teams on the relevant ICC T20I rankings, excluding those that have already qualified for the LA28 Olympic Games.

ICC Chairman, Mr Jay Shah said: “Cricket’s return to the Olympic Games is a landmark moment for our sport and a powerful opportunity to showcase the very best of cricket to the world. The confirmation of this qualification pathway is an important step towards Los Angeles 2028 and gives Members across the world a clear and exciting route to the Olympic stage.

“The Olympic Games represent the pinnacle of multi-event sport, and cricket’s inclusion at LA28 will inspire players and fans in every region. This is an historic moment, and one of great opportunity for our Members, as we continue to grow the game and take it to new audiences around the world.”

ICC Chief Executive, Sanjog Gupta, said: “Cricket’s return to the Olympic Games gives the sport a unique showcase on global sport’s grandest stage, supporting its introduction to new audiences and development in emerging markets, while providing the Olympic movement a gateway into the hearts and minds of more than two billion Cricket fans.”

“This qualification structure has been designed to optimise competitive standards and global representation within the IOC and LA28 participation guidelines. We are leveraging the existing ICC elite competition structure and introducing a new qualification event, which adds an exciting new milestone on the journey to LA28. We are grateful to the IOC, LA28 and all our Members, as well as their NOCs, for their continued support to Cricket’s return in the Olympics.”

Qualified nations will be able to pick from a squad of 15 players, with teams divided into groups of three. Each team will play each other once before playing two further matches against teams in the opposite group who did not finish in the same position.

The final top two will contest for gold and silver medals, with the third- and fourth-highest nations competing for bronze.

There will be a combined total of 28 matches played across both Men’s and Women’s events, and all matches will take place matches to be played at the purpose-built cricket venue in Pomona.

Each International Federation (IF) is responsible for establishing its sports rules for participation in the Olympic Games, including qualification criteria in accordance with the Olympic Charter.

Bankruptcy Judge Appoints Trustee, USA Cricket Board entirely Removed as Incapable of reorganizing.

The recent decision by a U.S. bankruptcy judge to remove the USA Cricket board marks a significant turning point in the governance and future direction of cricket in the United States. This action was taken to address ongoing issues within the organization, including leadership deadlock, management dysfunction, and failure to meet critical deadlines, which had resulted in the suspension of USA Cricket by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the withholding of essential funding.

On January 12, 2026, Judge Michael E. Romero of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Colorado issued an order that revoked USA Cricket’s Subchapter V bankruptcy status and appointed a Chapter 11 trustee. This move was driven by the organization’s inability to reorganize under its existing leadership, which was plagued by internal disputes and ineffective governance. The appointment of a trustee effectively replaces the authority of the current board, granting the trustee sweeping powers to stabilize operations, develop a reorganization plan, and re-engage with international and Olympic stakeholders.

Background and Context

Last Summer, USOPC demanded immediate resignation of full USA Cricket board amid governance crisis and later, International Cricket Council (ICC) has formally asked the board of USA Cricket (USAC) to resign as part of a broader plan to fix leadership and governance problems—steps that are necessary for cricket to be played at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics (LA28), Board did not respond to either call which end up in ICC suspension.

USA Cricket filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October 2025, citing a need for structural reorganization. The organization initially opted for Subchapter V, a streamlined process designed for smaller entities to reorganize quickly while maintaining management control. However, the organization failed to meet the December 31, 2025, deadline for submitting a viable bankruptcy reorganization plan, largely due to internal conflicts and deadlock among board members. The board’s inability to function effectively, with a narrow 5–4 majority that later turned into a deadlock 4-4, hindered decision-making and progress.

As a result, the court found that USA Cricket was incapable of self-reorganization and, as a last resort, revoked its Subchapter V status, appointing a trustee with broad authority to manage the organization’s affairs. This decision underscores the importance of good governance, especially for nonprofit sports organizations seeking recognition and support from international bodies like the ICC and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC).

Implications of the Trustee Appointment

The trustee’s responsibilities include filing a reorganization plan, managing daily operations, negotiating with creditors and stakeholders, and implementing governance reforms such as amendments to the bylaws. The trustee will also serve as the primary interface with the ICC and USOPC, which have emphasized the need for governance reforms, independent directors, and functional oversight to secure recognition as the sport’s national governing body in the U.S.

Importantly, the ICC has indicated that once the USA Cricket board is removed, it will reinstate membership and release withheld funding. This funding is critical for supporting the national team, high-performance programs, and preparations for upcoming ICC events in 2026, as well as the cricket competition at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Broader Goals and Future Steps

The overarching goal is to establish a stable and transparent governance structure that aligns with international standards and meets the expectations of the USOPC. This includes appointing independent directors, conducting new elections under a stabilized framework, and ensuring compliance with governance reforms. The process also involves resolving ongoing disputes, such as the termination of the long-term commercial agreement with ACE, which was halted by the bankruptcy filing.

What a Chapter 11 trustee means?

The trustee replaces both the board and executive authority. Under Section 1106 of the Bankruptcy Code, the trustee now:

  • Runs day-to-day operations
  • Files and prosecutes a reorganization plan
  • Negotiates with creditors and counterparties
  • Implements governance reforms
  • Acts as the sole representative to regulators

In practical terms: the board is gone, decision-making is centralized, and accountability is external.

Outstanding Issues: ACE Dispute

The ruling does not resolve USA Cricket’s dispute with American Cricket Enterprises (ACE) following termination of their commercial agreement.

What it does change is leverage and clarity:

  • Negotiations now run through the trustee
  • Arbitration or settlement decisions are centralized
  • Any future board will inherit a stabilized posture
  • The dispute is reset procedurally, not decided substantively.

LA28 Impact Map (Plain View)

After the ruling

✅ Independent trustee governance

✅ ICC engagement reopens

✅ USOPC roadmap executable

✅ CEO operational continuity

✅ Olympic preparation back on timeline

Next mandatory steps

  • Trustee files reorganization plan
  • Independent directors appointed
  • Governance framework reset
  • Elections held under stability
  • Full ICC and USOPC compliance restored

Bottom Line – Final Outcome

This is not a bailout — it’s a forced reset.

The court removed governance risk from the system. What follows depends on execution: credibility with regulators, disciplined restructuring, and a clean rebuild ahead of LA28.

For the first time in months, U.S. cricket is moving again — under supervision, with clarity, and on the clock.

Former USA Cricket Board directors,

most of them on expired terms are now removed/suspended when the judge appointed a Chapter 11 trustee

  • Venu Pisike — Chairman of the Board
  • Anj Balusu — League Director
  • Atul Rai — Club Director
  • Srini (Srinivas) Salver — Male Player Director
  • Nadia Gruny — Female Player Director
  • David Haubert (or Hubert) — Independent Director
  • Pintoo Shah — Independent Director
  • Kuljit (Kuljeet) Singh Nijjar — Elected Director (remained active in board disputes)
  • Arjun Rao Gona — Elected Director (active in governance fallout)

Overall, the success of this intervention depends on the trustee’s ability to restore credibility, rebuild the board, and coordinate effectively with international bodies. The ultimate aim is to facilitate cricket’s growth in the U.S., secure Olympic recognition, and ensure the organization’s long-term stability and success in the global cricket community from stalled pathway.

ICC suspends USA Cricket’s membership; builds safeguards to protect athletes and Olympic aspiration

Media release

The International Cricket Council (ICC), after a thorough review of affairs and extensive engagement with key stakeholders over the past year, today confirmed the suspension of ICC membership status of USA Cricket, with immediate effect.

The decision, taken by the ICC Board during its meeting earlier, was based on USA Cricket’s repeated and continued breaches of its obligations as a ICC Member under the ICC’s Constitution. These include, but are not limited to, the failure to implement a functional governance structure, lack of progress toward achieving National Governing Body status with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), and significant actions that have caused reputational damage to cricket in the United States and around the world.

The suspension is an unfortunate but necessary step to protect the long-term interests of the game and the ICC’s top priority remains ensuring that the athletes and the sport itself are not impacted due to the suspension. The ICC Board has decided that USA’s national teams will retain their right to participate in ICC events, including preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA28).

The management and administration of USA national teams will temporarily be overseen by the ICC and/or its designated representatives to ensure continued support for the players and maintain momentum towards Olympic inclusion. This approach reflects the ICC’s firm commitment to upholding the best interests of cricketers in the USA and the sustenance of a High-performance & Player development program which will seek to elevate the stature and capabilities of players representing USA.

The ICC Normalisation Committee, supported by the ICC management, will outline the steps required for the suspension on USA Cricket to lifted and its membership rights restored. These will include demonstrable and specific changes to USA Cricket’s governance structure, operations and overall status in the Cricket ecosystem. The normalization committee will also monitor USA Cricket’s progress and provide consultatory support.

The ICC remains committed to supporting the growth of cricket in the United States, protect the sporting ecosystem and its constituents, namely the athletes and bolstering its march towards a more significant role on the global stage.

For information:
USA Cricket was placed ‘on notice’ at the 2024 ICC Annual General Meeting for non-compliance with ICC Membership Criteria and given 12 months to remedy that non-compliance. On account of continued non-compliance with the ICC Membership Criteria, USA Cricket was to be considered for suspension at the 2025 AGM. It was only because of a representation made to the ICC normalization committee by USA Cricket and commitments made thereafter to the ICC Board in July, that the ICC Membership voted to keep them ‘on notice’. When USAC was notified of the AGM’s decision, it was specifically advised in writing that, along with fulfilling the commitments it made to the Board and taking immediate steps in that respect, it must (i) not do/omit to do anything that might jeopardise cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics, and (ii) not do anything (by act or omission) that brings cricket or the ICC into disrepute or is contrary to the best interests of cricket or the ICC.

USA U19 boys qualify to play 2026 ICC ODI World cup

The USA U19 boys team is set to participate in the 2026 ICC U19 World Cup, which will be hosted in Zimbabwe and Namibia.

The team secured their spot by emerging as undefeated champions in the ICC Americas qualifier held at Param Veers Sports, Rydal, Georgia, from August 9th to 16th, 2025.

The qualifier featured a round-robin format involving four teams, each team playing against the others twice to determine the regional representative for the 2026 ICC U19 World Cup. During this tournament, the USA U19 boys defeated Argentina, Bermuda and Canada twice, securing the top position and earning their place in the global competition.

Cricket’s popularity and growth in the United States have been accelerating, especially following the USA’s victory over Pakistan at home during the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The sport’s rise has been both rapid, driven by diaspora enthusiasm, grassroots initiatives, and structural efforts. The sport is gaining prominence, particularly with its inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

The increasing number of tournaments, youth programs and training academies across the country reflects a growing engagement among young players, supported by local groups and youth development initiatives.

Historically, the USA U19 team has participated in the ICC U19 World Cup on a few occasions. Their debut was in 2006 in Sri Lanka, where they finished in 12th place. They also competed in 2010 end up as winless, demonstrating ongoing development and competitiveness.

The upcoming 2026 ICC U19 World Cup will feature 16 teams. The top 10 teams qualification directly based on their performance in the 2024 World Cup, with Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies. Zimbabwe is serving as hosts or automatic qualification. Additionally, five teams will qualified through regional qualifiers: Afghanistan (Asia), Tanzania (Africa), Japan (Asia-Pacific), the USA (Americas), and Scotland (Europe). This expansion reflects the growing global reach of cricket and the increasing competitiveness of emerging cricket nations.
